David Smith Named Region 12 Assistant Principal of the Year

GOWANDA, NY – The Gowanda Central School District is proud to announce that David Smith, Assistant Principal for grades 5–12, has been selected as the Region 12 Assistant Principal of the Year by the School Administrators’ Association of New York State (SAANYS).

This prestigious honor arrives at a significant milestone in Mr. Smith’s career, as he recently announced his plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 school year. With 33 years in education—23 of those as a dedicated administrator at Gowanda—the award serves as a fitting tribute to a career defined by service, leadership, and community impact.

A Legacy of Leadership

Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson praised Smith’s contributions, noting that the recognition reflects a “consistent commitment to our district’s mission and values.” Known for his ability to connect with students across the middle and high school levels, Smith has been a pillar of the secondary program, balancing administrative duties with a genuine passion for student success.

Beyond the school hallways, Mr. Smith’s influence on the Gowanda community is profound. His resume of service includes:

  • Village Leadership: Serving seven years as the Mayor of Gowanda, where he oversaw major infrastructure improvements and significant grant awards.

  • Professional Advocacy: Currently serving as the President of the Gowanda Administrators’ Association.

  • Public Health: Serving as the President of the Cattaraugus County Board of Health.

A “Mic Drop” Retirement

For many in the district, the timing of the award adds a special layer of celebration. “Who we are is determined by our hearts and how we use the gifts that God has given us to serve and help other people,” Smith shared in a recent statement regarding his upcoming retirement.

As he prepares to “wind down” to spend more time with his family, including his wife Jill and his grandchildren, this regional accolade highlights the immense legacy he leaves behind.

The district invites all community members, students, and alumni to join in congratulating Mr. Smith on this well-deserved “high note” to cap off an extraordinary career.
