Empire State Winter Games Torch Assembly Inspires GES Students

Bringing Olympic-Style Winter Sports to Our School

Gowanda Elementary School students recently enjoyed a special visit connected to the Empire State Winter Games, giving them a closer look at the wide range of Olympic-style winter sports available to students across New York State each February.

The Torch Assembly introduced students to the idea that winter sports are for everyone. From hockey and skiing to skating and other cold-weather competitions, the message was clear: participation, perseverance, and curiosity matter just as much as winning.

Sparking Curiosity and Big Ideas

For many students, this was their first exposure to the Empire State Winter Games and the opportunities they offer. The presentation encouraged students to imagine themselves trying new sports, setting goals, and discovering what they are capable of when they step outside their comfort zone.

To keep the excitement going, students will also be bringing home Empire State Winter Games coloring pages and crayons, helping extend the conversation to families at home.

A Big Thank You

A huge shoutout to Mr. David Bolen for putting this entire experience together. His coordination and effort made it possible to bring this opportunity to our students, and we are grateful for his work in helping connect learning, inspiration, and real-world opportunities.

Thank you as well to our staff for their flexibility and support, and to the Empire State Winter Games team for visiting Gowanda Elementary School.

Winter Is an Opportunity

At GES, moments like this help students see that big dreams can start early. Winter is not a barrier. It is an invitation to try, to learn, and to grow stronger.
