GOWANDA, NY

The student editorial staff at Gowanda High School has officially published the Spring 2026 digital edition of The Phoenix, documenting student life, travel, creative writing, and historic district retirements.

The publication is spearheaded by Student Editor Zander Hammond and English teacher advisor Mrs. Lauren Giancola. This final issue of the academic year highlights major milestones for the school community, led by an extensive cover story detailing the deep impact of retiring administrator Mr. David Smith. The tribute incorporates reflections from students across multiple grade levels, including seniors Carter Capozzi and Corrina John, junior Zach Barsky, and freshmen Dylan Estes, Tessa Bylbie, Lindsay Robertson, and Elayna Ashley, alongside counseling center administrative assistant Mrs. Draegert and Spanish teacher Mrs. Dempsey.

Beyond campus walls, the spring edition features an international travel log documenting the Educational Travel Club’s ten-day journey across Greece. Written by Zander Hammond, the piece offers readers a clear window into student exploration at the Parthenon, Delphi, and local cultural experiences.

The newspaper also serves as a hub for student data and commentary. Staff Writer Isabella DeGolier provides a breakdown of a 31-student survey identifying local after-school snack preferences, featuring quotes from seniors Emma Golden and Carter Capozzi. The culture and opinion pages include comprehensive summer movie previews by staff writer Helena Wallschlaeger, a guest athletic commentary by Carter Capozzi, and three original works by staff poet Harley Emery.

The district invites all community members, families, and alumni to read the publication online to support the diligent work of these young local journalists. High school students interested in joining the newspaper staff for the 2026-2027 school year can attend the first organizational meeting this September.
