Gowanda Students Explore Careers in Medical Laboratory Science

GOWANDA, NY — The Gowanda High School Counseling Center continued its monthly “Career Spotlight Series” recently by welcoming guest presenters to highlight the vital and diverse field of Medical Laboratory Science.

This month’s featured guests, Ms. Bettker and Mr. Da’Amaro, provided students with an in-depth look at the professional opportunities available within the laboratory industry. The presentation moved beyond the traditional hospital setting, illustrating how lab science is essential to fields such as:

  • Food Production: Ensuring the safety and quality of what we eat.

  • Biomedical Manufacturing: Developing the tools and technologies used in modern medicine.

  • Forensic vs. Medical Testing: Clarifying the distinct differences between investigating crime scenes and diagnosing patient health.

  • Medical Lab Technicians & Sales: Highlighting the technical and commercial sides of the industry.

In addition to exploring day-to-day responsibilities, students learned about the post-secondary education requirements, certification paths, and salary potential for these high-demand careers.

“Our goal with the Career Spotlight Series is to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workforce,” said Jennifer Mattimore, High School Counselor. “Seeing the range of possibilities within Medical Laboratory Science helps our students envision a future in STEM that they may not have previously considered.”

The district extends a sincere thank you to Ms. Bettker and Mr. Da’Amaro for their time and for providing such a fascinating, hands-on perspective for our students.
