GOWANDA TRAVEL CLUB: GREECE 2026

Beyond the Classroom: The Gowanda Experience

At Gowanda Central School District, we believe that education should never be confined to the four walls of a classroom. The 2026 Travel Club trip to Greece represents the pinnacle of "The Gowanda Experience"—providing our students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history, language, and culture of the Mediterranean.

Guided by Art Department Chairperson Heather Rydzik and our dedicated chaperones, these Panthers are not just tourists; they are global learners. From the heights of the Acropolis to the birthplace of Alexander the Great, every step of this journey is designed to turn ancient history into a living, breathing reality.

This portal serves as our digital scrapbook, connecting our travelers back to the families and community members in Gowanda, NY. We invite you to follow along as we explore the world together. 💙

The Panthers began the day with a guided tour of Athens, exploring the birthplace of the modern Olympics (1896), the massive Temple of Zeus, and the statue of Alexander the Great. We then scaled the historic Acropolis ("acro" = top, "polis" = city) for unforgettable, breathtaking views of the capital.

At the summit, Mrs. Rydzik crowned the champions of our airport scavenger hunt: 🥳👑

  • Cashis, Jayden, Xander, Bella, Cora, and Maleina.

We concluded our deep dive into history with a visit to the incredible Acropolis Museum, exploring the artifacts discovered on the very hill we just climbed.

Macedonian Kings: Pella & Vergina 👑
Today the Panthers dove into the power of the Macedonian kingdom. Our morning began at the Archaeological Museum of Pella, the ancient capital and birthplace of Alexander the Great, where we admired detailed pebble mosaics and busts of Alexander. We then moved to the incredible Museum of the Royal Tombs at Vergina. Built directly onto the ancient tumulus, this underground museum preserves the 4th-century BC tomb of Philip II (Alexander's father), allowing us to view these royal artifacts in their original location.

A Grand Greek Finale: Opa! 🕺🏺
Our final full day in Greece was one to remember! After a relaxing morning by the pool and beach, we dove into a traditional "Greek Evening." We learned the art of olive oil production (and the secret to Extra Virgin quality!) with a fresh bread tasting. The night was filled with high spirits—traditional dancing, joyfully broken plates, and a hilarious plate-cleaning competition. We enjoyed a feast of traditional Greek foods and ended our journey on a sweet note with gelato. Off to the airport tomorrow!
