As part of the ongoing state transition first introduced in July 2025, the NYS Education Department and Board of Regents released an updated framework for high school graduation requirements last week. This announcement marks the next planned step in the state’s Portrait of a Graduate initiative.
Here is what this means for our district:
- Expected Timeline: Target changes are set to begin with the Class of 2028 as New York transitions toward a single diploma pathway.
- More Graduation Pathways Available: Passing a specific set of Regents exams will no longer be the only route to a diploma, but Regents exams are not being eliminated. They will remain an important way for students to demonstrate subject mastery.
- No Immediate Changes: Current graduation requirements remain fully in effect for all students while the state finalizes formal regulations over the coming school year.
